Only a few new shops have been opened in the area during the
year, but considerable reconstruction is being carried out to
individual premises. Where possible shopkeepers are encouraged
to incorporate a better standard of amenities for their employees in
such premises.
In a few cases, shops legally permitted to open in the afternoon
of the early closing day, or on Sundays, for trade in certain
commodities, have been selling other articles. Warnings have
been issued where necessary.
No Closing Orders have been made in the district. The
general closing days vary throughout the area and are as follow:—
Wednesday—St. Paul's Cray Estate (except Leith Hill), Chislehurst,
The Oval, Lamorbey, Lewis Road, Sidcup.
Thursday—Sidcup area (other than above) and Mottingham.
A few shops open on the usual early closing day and remain
closed on Saturday afternoon. Again the Council decided to use
its powers to suspend the general closing hours of shops prior to
Christmas.

CLEAN AIR ACT, 1956.
Measurement of Atmospheric Pollution.
There are installed within the district five instruments for the
measurement of atmospheric pollution. Deposit gauges, for
measuring the solid particles in the air, are situated at the Footscray
County Primary School, Sidcup (Riverside Road), and at the
County Primary Roman Catholic School, Sidcup (Lamorbey). The
analysis of the matter collected is of particular value in determining
the extent of pollution by cement flue dust. This substance is
emitted from the concentration of cement factories situated on the
