RAG FLOCK AND OTHER FILLING MATERIALS ACT,
1951.
There are no premises in the district licensed under the Rag
Flock Act.
RIDING ESTABLISHMENTS ACT, 1939.
There are now four establishments from which horses are
hired out for the purpose of riding.
The animals, consisting of 30 horses and 46 ponies were
inspected by the Veterinary Surgeon appointed for the purpose.
Four visits were made and the animals were reported to be in good
health. The Inspectors paid a further 30 visits.
Improvements to stables have been carried out where
necessary.
RIVERS AND STREAMS.
I am informed by the Engineer and Surveyor that apart from
the normal maintenance of streams and rivers for which he is
responsible, only the normal patrolling has been found necessary.
The year was exceptionally dry, and only on one occasion did
rainfall exceed 1" in 24 hours compared with five occasions in 1958.
This was on 29th July when 1.03 inches fell. On 27th October the
amount recorded was 0.94 inches. On the former date some
flooding occurred, affecting mainly the highway at two points and
in six private gardens.

Considerable attention has been given by this Department, to
the eradication of rats, which nest in the banks of the streams, as
it is considered that such settlements can serve as a "reservoir" for
vermin, which may then infest adjoining properties.
Close watch is kept on the streams for signs of pollution and a
total of 89 visits have been made to rivers and streams.
