Although Chislehurst and Sidcup is urban in character, it is
fortunate in possessing a variety of open spaces, as befits a district
on the edge of the metropolis. The eastern edge of the area
forms a part of the Metropolitan Green belt and on it many fine
orchards thrive. Forming a wooded wedge between Chislehurst
and St. Paul's Cray, is an extensive area of well cared for Common
Land. Near to the London County Council's boundary there are
many privately owned games fields which help to preserve the open
character of the district.
The Council, too, provides and cares for some 480 acres of
open space. Here too, we find woodland and games pitches and
in addition many well placed parks, gardens and recreation
grounds in which the children, old people and the populace
generally, may relax.
The children are especially catered for by the provision of
playground equipment on several sites and the employment of
Games Wardens was continued at five of the parks. This facility
