The natural increase of population, measured by excess of
births over deaths, was 509.
It is of interest to note that the population of the Urban District
has risen by 8,980 during the past ten years.
BIRTHS.
The birth rate for 1959 was 14.3 per 1,000 total population,
which is a decrease of 0.9 compared with the previous year. The
adjusted rate for comparison with other areas is 13.9.
The rate of 14.3 is well below that 16.5 for England and Wales
as a whole.
1,271 live births were registered in the Urban District during
the year, as against 1,342 in 1958. Of this number, 662 were males
and 609 females.
The illegitimate birth rate was 40.9 per 1,000 live and still
births. There were 53 illegitimate births (including 2 stillbirths),
29 being males and 24 females.
Of a total of 23 stillbirths registered, 7 were males and
16 females. The stillbirth rate for the year being 17.8 per 1,000
total live and still births, and 0.3 per 1,000 estimated total
population.
DEATHS.
Seven hundred and sixty-two deaths appertaining to the Urban
District were registered in 1959, giving a death rate of 8.6 per 1,000
total population. The adjusted rate for use when comparing one
area with another is 11.3. The rate for England and Wales as a
whole is 11.6.
Of the Chislehurst and Sidcup deaths, 389 were males and 373
females.
