Diphtheria and Diphtheria Immunisation.
I am pleased to be able to report a complete absence of this
disease in the Urban District during 1958.
The County Medical Officer has kindly furnished the following
information with regard to Diphtheria Immunisation:—
Of the children resident in the area who were born since 1943,
a total of 1,046 received primary inoculations and 688 received
reinforcing inoculations during 1958.
A total of 17,714 children under the age of fifteen years on
31st December, 1958, have completed a course of immunisation at
some time prior to that date.
Dysentery.
The figures for 1958 show a considerable decrease when
compared with those for the previous year. Twelve cases were
notified as against eighty-one in 1957. One patient was admitted
to hospital, but no deaths were recorded from this disease.
Food Poisoning.
A total of twelve confirmed cases of food poisoning occurred
in the area during 1958, as against twenty-three during the previous
year.
There were no serious outbreaks of this disease, most of the
cases reported being isolated ones, a fact which tends to show that
care and cleanliness in the storage and preparation of food is as
important in the home kitchen as it is elsewhere.
The following is a copy of the annual return rendered to the
