which milk bottles are misused. There is less excuse for those
responsible for the sale of bread containing foreign matter, although
the human element seems to play a part here.
Some complaints concerned outdated or mouldy pies, etc., and
the Committee brought to the attention of those concerned the
desirability of marking such short lived produce with a date,
indicating to the purchaser the day on which it was manufactured.
In appropriate instances, those responsible for the sale of
unsatisfactory items of food stuff were required to take steps to
prevent, as far as possible, any recurrence. In a number of cases,
warning letters were sent and the following prosecutions were
instituted:—
Match stick in loaf—fined £10, plus £3 3s. costs.
Mouldy meat pie—fined £28, plus £5 5s. costs.
Infested oatmeal—fined £25, plus £5 5s. costs.
