SHOPS ACT, 1950.
The number of shops within the meaning of the Act, existing
at the 31st December, 1958, was 850. They are situated as
follow:—
Lamorbey and Blackfen 260
Sidcup and Footscray 286
North Cray and St. Paul's Cray 100
Chislehurst and Mottingham 204
850
Only a few new shops have been opened in the area during the
year, but considerable modernisation, often of a structural nature is
being carried out to individual premises. Where possible
shopkeepers are encouraged to incorporate a better standard of
amenities for their employees in such premises.
There is evidence that in a few cases shops permitted to open in
the afternoon of the early closing day, or on Sundays for trade in
certain commodities have been selling other articles. Warnings
have been issued where necessary.
No Closing Orders have been made in the district. The
general closing days vary throughout the area and are as follow :
Wednesday—St. Paul's Cray Estate (except Leith Hill), Chislehurst,
The Oval, Lamorbey, Lewis Road, Sidcup.
Thursday—Sidcup area, other than above.
A few shops open on the usual early closing day and remain
closed on Saturday afternoon. Again the Council decided to use
its powers to suspend the general closing hours of shops prior to
Christmas.
Visits and observations total 360.
