SECTION C.
SANITARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL
CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
AGRICULTURE (SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELFARE
PROVISIONS) ACT, 1956.
This Act places on local authorities the duty of securing the
provision and maintenance of sanitary accommodation for the use
of employees on agricultural holdings. The number of agricultural
holdings within the district, which come under the terms of this
Act, is limited.
Thirty visits have been paid in connection with the requirements
of the Act.
CESSPOOLS.
Three new cesspools have been installed during the year, all for
private dwellings, where access to a sewer is not possible. Four
cesspools have been abolished.
There are now 399 premises not connected to main drainage.

Sidcup and Footscray 7 7

St. Paul's Cray 77 49

In a number of cases two or more properties drain to one
cesspool. There are also several premises provided with small
sewage disposal plants and a few using chemical or earth closets.
The total number of cesspools in use in the district is now 315.
It has not been possible during the year to institute any scheme
of sewerage designed to accommodate houses not at present on
main drainage, but active consideration is being given to the laying
of sewers in roadways adjacent to Leesons Hill, St. Paul's Cray,
and for a small block of houses on Sevenoaks Way, St. Paul's Cray.
The Council's cesspool emptying service, instituted in 1954,
allows owners to have their cesspools emptied promptly and at a
moderate charge. Although not taken advantage of by all persons
concerned, it has undoubtedly been a factor in the prevention of
nuisances occurring from overflow of effluent.
