SLUM CLEARANCE.
Procedures designed to set in motion the second year of the
Council’s five year programme for slum clearance were instituted.
Generally speaking these procedures are lengthy and frequently
preclude the possibility of completion in the same year, especially
if demolition is involved.
1956 Programme.
Hope and Sydney Cottages, Main Road, St. Paul’s Cray, were
declared a Clearance Area, and will demolished by the owner.
1-6 Albert Place, Main Road, St. Paul’s Cray, were declared
a Clearance Area and negotiations have been instituted with the
owner with a view of purchase by the Council.
69 and 71 Halfway Street, Sidcup, were declared to be
individually unfit houses and were demolished by the owner. The
tenants were rehoused.
1957 Programme.
4,5 and 6 Woods Cottages, Nelson Road, Sidcup, were
declared to be individually unfit houses and an undertaking has
been accepted from the owner not to re-let. The tenants will be
rehoused by the Council.
Rose Cottage and Nutley Cottage, High Street, Footscray, were
subjected to the same procedure, but re-housing of tenants was not
necessary as they were already vacant.
5 Cray Road, Footscray, was represented as being unfit and
will be dealt with by closure.
19 and 20 Garden Cottage, Footscray, were scheduled to be
included in the 1957 programme. Inspection revealed that works
of improvement had been carried out since the original survey
in 1953. They have rendered demolition or closure inappropriate,
at present, but will be kept under observation.
In addition to the programme scheduled for 1957, Nos. 16 and
17 Mill Place, were found to be unfit. The former was subjected
to a Demolition Order and the latter to a Closing Order. In both
cases tenants were rehoused by the Council.
HOUSING ACT, 1949.
During the year, 34 applications for Improvement Grants, and
a further three for conversions were dealt with.
The total amount of the works concerned amounted to £13,677,
whilst the sum of grants came to £6,239.
