SWIMMING BATHS.
There are two small open air swimming pools in the area.
One is in the grounds of a factory and is used by employees, whilst
the other, although privately owned, admits members of the public
on a limited scale. Treatment is undertaken to keep the water in
a pure condition.
Four visits have been paid to these baths whilst in use and the
three samples of water taken all proved satisfactory.
VERMINOUS CONDITIONS AND UNCLEANLINESS.
Eighteen complaints were received in connection with premises
alleged to be verminous or filthy and in this connection 26 inspections
were made.
In only seven cases were insect infestations found, five of them
being premises controlled by the Council. Work of disinfestation
was carried out by the Department in four cases whilst the others
were dealt with by occupiers.
One or two elderly persons living in dirty conditions came to
the notice of the Department. Often these people live alone and
it is sometimes possible to arrange for some amelioration through
the ancillary County Health Services or by voluntary bodies.
WATER SUPPLY.
The supply of water to the district is from the mains of the
Metropolitan Water Board. In two cases only are there premises
within the district not connected to the public supply, water being
obtained from one private well. A sample from this source proved
satisfactory. Two samples of water taken from wells attached to
each of two factories were indicative of possible pollution. These
were kept under observation and a further 11 samples proved to be
satisfactory.
Routine sampling is carried out by the Metropolitan Water
Board and the results are indicated in the following tables.
Eighteen samples were also taken by the Department and submitted
for both bacteriological and chemical analysis. All were reported
to be satisfactory.
Some inconvenience was occasioned to householders residing
in a considerable area of Chislehurst during peak periods in the
warm spell in June and July. In some instances no water could
be drawn from taps supplied direct from the main.
This was due to exceptionally heavy demands on the supply
and additional pumps have since been installed with a view to
preventing any recurrence.
