MORBIDITY STATISTICS.
The following is a summary of the weekly details received
from the Ministry of National Insurance during 1957 :—
Four weeks ending. Number of certificates of incapacity.
First. Intermediate. Final.
22nd January 971 4,004 866
19th February 840 3,627 826
19th March 967 3,664 851
16th April 765 3,427 739
14th May 707 3,264 648
11th June 554 3,144 552
9th July 520 2,939 506
6th August 471 2,655 411
3rd September 529 2,737 435

26th November 1,172 3,876 1,487
31st Dec. (5 weeks) 1,594 3,714 1,349
These figures follow the usual yearly trend with one important
and dramatic difference. In an ordinary year the January and
February figures show the highest incidence of illness, but in 1957,
the last four months were by far the worst and in October, when
the influenza epidemic reached its peak, the number of persons
incapacitated was quite exceptionally high.
UNEMPLOYMENT.
I am indebted to the Manager of the local Employment
Exchange for the following information with regard to unemployment
in the area during 1957 :—
"As regards the unemployment position, 1957 has been a good
year for the Urban District of Chislehurst and Sidcup, and local
firms have maintained a good position. A few new small firms
have added to the variety of industry in the area.
Unemployment among women has been negligible, in fact
there has been a decided shortage of young full-time female labour.
Unemployment among men has also been very small."
MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS.
Thirty-three members, or potential members of the staff were
medically examined for Superannuation purposes etc., during the
year.
