RAG FLOCK AND OTHER FILLING MATERIALS ACT,
1951.
There are no premises in the district licensed under the Rag
Flock Act.
RIDING ESTABLISHMENTS ACT, 1939.
During the year there were four riding stables open in the
district. One of these commenced business in the Autumn, whilst
another, where the stables were not altogether satisfactory, closed
down.
The animals consisting of 36 horses, 31 ponies, and 1 foal,
were inspected by the Veterinary Surgeon appointed for the
purpose. Seven visits were made and the animals reported to be
in good health. The Inspectors paid a further six visits.
RIVERS AND STREAMS.
The South bank of the River Shuttle, East of Burnt Oak Lane
Culvert, was revetted for a distance of twenty yards. The average
height of the stone retaining wall is 8'. The usual works of
clearance and maintenance have also been carried out by the
Engineer and Surveyor's Department.
Considerable attention has been given by the Department to
the eradication of rats which nest in the banks of the streams.
Close watch is kept on the streams for signs of pollution.
RODENT CONTROL.
A second rodent operative was appointed during the Summer,
but a few months later, Mr. A. Ellis, who had served the Council
so well for fifteen years, passed away.
It will be remembered that infestation was exceptionally high
in 1955. It has been at a slightly lower level in 1956, and this
may, in part be due to the extra labour available for carrying out
treatments promptly, thus preventing the rats from spreading.
