SECTION C.
SANITARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL
CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
AGRICULTURE (SAFETY. HEALTH AND WELFARE
PROVISIONS) ACT, 1956.
This Act came into operation on the 5th July, 1956, its main
object being to make provision for securing the safety, health and
welfare of farm workers and avoiding accidents to children arising
out of the use of agricultural equipment.
CESSPOOLS.
Six new cesspools have been installed during the year, 2 of
which drain sports pavilions.
Forty-five cesspools are known to have been abolished during
the year. The majority of these were dealt with subsequent to
the laying of short lengths of public sewer and are mainly in
Footscray and Sevenoaks Way, St, Paul's Cray.
There are now 421 premises not connected to main drainage.

Sidcup and Footscray 8

St. Paul's Cray 80
Chislehurst and Mottingham 85

In a number of cases two or more properties are drained to
the same cesspool. The total number of cesspools in use in the
district is now 320.
It is hoped that a further length of sewer will be laid, during
1957, at Birchwood Corner, Hockenden. This will enable
several more houses, now drained to cesspools, to connect to main
drainage. Consideration is also being given to the construction
of the necessary sewerage works so that properties in the North
Cray area may be connected to the new sewer, already provided
for the Bedens Field Housing Estate.
The cesspool emptying service instituted by the Council in
1954, continues to function satisfactorily. A charge of 7/6 per
load of 600 gallons is made for removal from private houses and
15/- for the same quantity in respect of business premises.
