Chalk Pit, Ruxley.
This site is used by families of the gipsy type, many of whom
leave in the summer to engage in fruit picking, but return in due
course. There was a considerable increase in the number of families
in residence during the Autumn of 1955 and the Committee decided
to issue licences to 31 families only, in order to prevent overcrowding
on the site. The owner has been required to remove unlicensed
dwellings from the Pit.
Corke's Meadow, St. Paul's Cray.
The conditions at this site are very similar to those reported
previously. Consultations with the London County Council, the
Kent County Council, and the Ministry of Housing and Local
Government, regarding the establishment of a Council controlled
site at Highlands Wood, St. Paul's Cray, have continued. It is
intended that the occupants of Corke's Meadow should be moved
to Highlands Wood, where proper amenities could be provided.
There is considerable local opposition to the proposed new site.
