SMOKE ABATEMENT.
Sixteen inspections and observations were made of premises
in the district.
Emission of " Cement Dust." Many complaints were received
during the early part of the year on the whitish grey dust deposits in
the district. It is likely that this was dust from cement works.
Together with neighbouring Authorities, the matter was taken up
with the manufacturers of cement. The Deputy Chief Inspector
of Alkali, etc.. Works. Ministry of Housing and Local Government,
was consulted. Representatives of the Council later attended
meetings of the Thames-side Advisory Committee of Atmospheric
Pollution. On 1st August. 1953. a deposit gauge for the measurement
of deposited matter was installed on the roof of Footscray
County Primary School. Riverside Road. Sidcup.
