DEATHS.
The Death Rate for the year 1951 is 8.9 per 1,000 total population. Of the 757 deaths occurring, 379 were males and 378 females. The following table shows the main causes of death:—

Maternal Mortality.
There were four maternal deaths in the Urban District
during the year. During the last ten years, maternal deaths
have been as follows:—

Infantile Mortality.
The Infant Mortality rate for the year is 23.3 per 1,000 live
births. 32 infants died during 1951 before reaching their first
birthday, and the following relates to these cases:—
Died in first four weeks of life 19
Died within first week and twelfth month 32
The infantile mortality rate for 1951 is exactly the same as
that for 1950.
UNEMPLOYMENT.
I am indebted to the Manager of the Local Employment
Exchange for the following information:—
"At the beginning of the year there was the usual seasonal
increase, followed by very low registers during the summer.
This was despite the increase of population due to the building
of Council Estates in or near this neighbourhood.
