Phthisis.
Three of the eight notifications referred to patients from good
"houses in the district, where they were employed, one as a
governess and two as domestic servants, and in two of the cases
other members of the patient's family had had tuberculosis. Two
other cases occurred in cottages in good sanitary condition, and in
one of these families also there had been a previous case of tuberculosis.
Another of the cases was a single man, aged 42, who had
come into the district for the fruit picking. He was housed in one
of the fruit-picker's huts, and was the sole occupant, and was
authorised to attend the Tuberculosis Dispensary at Bromley. Disinfectants
and sputum utensils were supplied to him, and the hut
was lime-washed periodically. The last case notified in the year was
a wounded Belgian soldier, who had been sent to one of the temporary
hospitals in the district. He was removed to the Royal
Herbert Military Hospital, Woolwich.
There were three cases of non-pulmonary tuberculosis notified.
One case was a girl, aged 10 years, who was suffering from tuberculosis
of the hip joint. She had received treatment five years ago
at the Great Ormond Street and the Croydon Hospitals as an outpatient,
and at the Workhouse Infirmary a few years ago, but had
apparently never been notified. An opportunity had been afforded
the parents to have the child received into a local Hospital on payment
of a small weekly sum, which the parents were endeavouring
to take advantage of.
A second case was a man, aged 44, with tuberculosis of the
spine. He was receiving treatment at the Sidcup Cottage Hospital.
