At the request of the Local Government Board the Vital Statistics for
1915 have been based on two populations: the estimated population at the
middle of 1914 has been used in calculating the birth-rate and the civil
portion only of the population, based on the figures yielded by the National
Register taken in August 1915, has been used us a basis for the death-rate,
and all military deaths have been excluded from the tables, which thus
relate exclusively to the civilian population.
According to the figures supplied by the Local Government Board the
civil population for the Chislehurst Urban District is 8,341.
Births and the birth-rate.—There were 164 births registered in the
district and three births were trauferred to it from outside, making the net
births 167 (84 males and 83 females) and the net birth rate 18.3 which,
though lower than in 1914, is about the average in this district for the five
years 1910-1914. The birth-rate for the whole of England and Wale3 was 21.8
Deaths and the death-rate.—Sixty-seven deaths were registered in
the district giving a crude death-rate of 8.0. Two deaths of non-residents
were transferred away and 22 deaths of residents which took place outside
the district were transferred to it, making the net deaths 87 and the net
death-rate 10.4, both number and rate being identical with those for 1910.
Had the rate been calculated on a normal population instead of on the basis
of the civil portion only, it would have been 9.4, The rate for the whole of
England and Wales was 15.1.
Eight deaths were certified as due to one or other of the following
epidemic diseases, viz:—
Diarrhoea and Enteritis (under 2 years) 0
Diphtheria 1
Measles 1
Whooping-cough 5
Enteric Fever 0
Scarlet Fever 1
Small-pox 0
8
The Death rate from these Epidemic Diseases was 0.97 per 1,000
of population, compared with 0 22 in 1914, 0.33 in 1913, 0.11 in 1912, and
0.69 in 1911.
The following table gives the rates for this district in comparison with
those for the whole of England and Wales for the six chief epidemic diseases.
