Food Hygiene. A close supervision is strictly maintained on all
premises concerned with the preparation, storage, and sale of food, whilst
the manufacturers, caterers, and shopkeepers are constantly reminded of
their responsibilities to the general publico Ice Cream is a commodity
which calls for a high level of hygienic consideration, and the attention
it has received from my officers is apparent from an examination of the
section devoted thereto.
Housing Conditions. The provision and maintenance of satisfactoryhousing
conditions continues to receive the active attention of both
District and Housing Inspectors as required by the various Acts, Orders and
Regulations governing this part of a local authority's responsibilities.
An additional Sanitary Inspector was appointed during the year to
deal mainly with the supervision of food premises and certain provisions
of the Factories Act, 1937.
Inspections, It will be seen that the work of the Department
continues to increase, and in passing I would indicate that the number of
visits and inspections aggregated 22,223, as compared with 19,350 in 1950.
Welfare of Old People, Every endeavour is made to bring some
measure of happiness and freedom from care into the lives of those who
by reason of advanced age or infirmity are unable to lead a full life,
and an account of the many and varied facilities available will be found
in this report,
I record with sincere gratitude the keen interest and support which
the Chairman and Members of the Public Health and Baths Committee have
consistently shown in all the problems it has been my duty to place before
them, I have been particularly appreciative of the courtesy and
consideration which they and Members of other Committees have extended to
me. I would also like to express my gratitude to all members of the
Public Health Department for the loyal and zealous manner in which they
have performed their particular duties,
I am, Madam Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
J.H. WEIR
Medical Officer of Health.
