INFANT MORTALITY
Nineteen deaths of infants under 1 year of age occurred during
the year, representing a death rate of 23.2 per 1,000 live births as
compared with 25.3 in 1950. The infant mortality rates for England
and Wales, and London were 29.6 and 26.4 respectively. Thirteen of
the deaths recorded were in infants under four weeks of age. Deaths
were attributed to:-
Atelectasis 3 Influenzal Meningitis 1
Broncho—pneumonia 1 Misadventure 1
Congenital malformations 2 Pneumonia 1
Erythroblastosis 1 Prematurity 7
Gastro-enteritis 1 Sarcoma of lower jaw 1
Whilst it is of interest to record that the death rate of infants
under the age of one year is the lowest ever obtained in the Borough,
it is far more satisfactory to observe that the actual number of deaths
