To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea.
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit my Annual Report on the health
and sanitary conditions of the Borough for 1946. In accordance
with instructions from the Ministry of Health, the report has
again been prepared in abridged form.
The Registrar-General's estimate of the population of
the Borough was 45,740 (353,10 in 1945).
The birth rate (17.8) was the highest since 1920. The
death rate (12.0) was lower than in 1945 (15.2). The infant
mortality rate was 44 per 1,000 live births as compared with 45
in 1945.
The health of the population was satisfactory.
There was a decrease in the total incidence of notifiable
infectious disease. The total number of notifications was 686,
as compared with 754 in 1945.
Diphtheria immunisation was maintained at a high level
throughout the year.
Maternity and Child welfare work has continued to grow
in extent and usefulness. The attendances by mothers at the
ante-natal clinic totalled 3,311 (~s compared with 2,302 in
1945) - a record number since the inception of this clinic.
Close attention was devoted to the supervision of food
supplies.
I have again to express ray appreciation of the work of the
staff of the Public Health Department.
I should like to thank members of the Council for the
support and sympathetic consideration which they have extended
to me and for their attention to the problems which it has been
my duty to lay before them.
I am,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
w.h.l. MCCarthy, m.d., d.p.h.,
Medical Officer of Health.
