A volumetric apparatus for the measurement 0f sulphur
dioxide and smoke is installed at the Health Department,
Brampton Road, and a summary of the results obtained is
set out below.

Clean Air Act, 1956—Smoke Control Areas.
During 1958 the Council approved in principle the
first smoke control area in the Borough, and instructed the
Medical Officer of Health and myself to arrange for a pilot
survey to be carried out. The proposed area coprises 1352
dwelling houses, shops, etc. The report of the survey was
considered by the Council in 1959, and the proposed area
was submitted to the Minister of Housing and local
Government for approval, which was received. The deatiled
survey has now been completed and work is going ahead on
the preparation of the schedules prior to the order being
made for confirmation by the Minister.

PREVENTION OF DAMAGE BY PESTS ACT, 1949.
One full time Rodent Operative is employed by the
Department for the treatment of surface infestations, and the
test baiting and maintenance treatment of sewers is carried
out by the sewermen under the supervision of the Department
No charge is made for treatment carried out at private
dwelling houses, but the occupiers of business premises are
charged for disinfestation work.
