During 1958 the Council approved in principle the
first smoke control area in the Borough, and instructed the
Medical Officer of Health and myself to arrange for a pilot

considered by the Council in 1959, and the proposed area
was submitted to the Minister of Housing and Local Government
for approval, which was received. The detailed
Survey was then commenced and at the time of writing is
nearing completion.
