1. (i) Water Supply.
The water to the district is supplied by the Metropolitan
Water Board and is derived from several sources namely,
Wilmington, Darenth, Wansunt, Crayford, Bexley and
Deptford wells, the latter mixed with Thames-derived water
filtered at Walton. All the water is chlorinated as it leaves
the works. There have been no important extensions of
trunk mains and there have been no changes in the general
scheme of supply to the Borough during 1955 except that
the area supplied from Castlewood reservoir now has water
from Bexley well and not Thames-derived and Deptford well.
Bacteriological analyses are made at least five times
a week from all supplies and in the case of the wells the
water is sampled both before and after chlorination. The
water derived from the River Thames is sampled at each
stage of the purification process and tanks to provide an
adequate period of contact of the chlorine with the water
are now in operation at all the well stations and at Walton
works.
All new and repaired mains are chlorinated before being
restored to use and samples of water from them are tested
bacteriologically.
During the year 12 samples of water from piped supplies
were taken and submitted to the Public Health Laboratory
for bacteriological examination and all were found to be
satisfactory.
(ii) Drainage and Sewerage.
Sewers have been constructed on the following estates:—
Halcot No. 3 Estate
S.W. Sewers = 178 lin. yds.
Foul Sewers = 104 lin. yds.
Cold Blow Crescent
Foul Sewer = 115 lin. yds.
In addition to the above mentioned works, short lengths
of sewers of back drainage system have been constructed to
serve small numbers of houses erected by private developers.
2. Rivers and Streams.
One case of pollution of rivers or streams was found
during the year.
