On December 6th the use of the Bursted Wood Tip
was discontinued and refuse disposal was confined to the
Tip at East Wickham which should be able to meet the
needs of the Borough for some years to come.
The year 1948 was noteworthy in that on July 5th
the Borough Council ceased to be a welfare authority and
their maternity and child welfare services were transferred
to the County Council. With them went the
responsibility for ambulances, domestic helps and
immunisation. The loss of local autonomy is keenly felt
in view of the previous high standard of child care which
had been achieved in the Borough and which is reflected
in the vital statistics of the area.
I wish to express my sincere thanks to the Chairman
and Members of the Health Committee for their sympathetic
help and encouragement and also to the members
of the Health Department, both those remaining with us
and those transferred to the County Council, for their
devoted help and co-operation during the year.
I am,
Your obedient servant,
JOHN LANDON,
Medical Officer of Health.
