BECKENHAM DISTRICT TUBERCULOSIS
CARE COMTITIEE
The following report on the work of the local Tuberculosis Care
Committee has been submitted by the Hon. Secretary., Mr. M.E, Forster,
to whom I express my thanks.
Twenty seven years ago the Beckernham District Tuberculosis Care
Committee was set up to help tubercular patients and their families
in Beckenham and West Wickham,
During 1964. this Voluntary Committee continued its work by
spending nearly £320 on such items as gifts at Christmas, meat
vouchers, fare for families to visit patients in hospital or
sanatorium; settling of electricity and gas bills, and H.P. debts;
helping with removal expenses; providing clothing, occupational
therapy materials, holidays, house decorations, and correspondence courses.
The Committee works in close co-operation with the Chest Clinics
and any cases which are referred to the Committee are promptly attended
to by one of two Liaison Officers who are authorised to spend up to
£5 on immediate needs. Other cases are dealt with at the monthly
meetings or, in emergency, by a sub-committee made up of the Committee
officers.
The Committee has 23 members who represent most voluntary
organisations in the area, and relies mainly on its yearly sale of
Christmas Seals to replenish its funds. This year it brought In
£295. Other money was raised through a Jumble Sale, and the balance
made up from donations.
Compared with last year, the Committee spent about £10 more in
giving 101 grants to less patients, bat the Committee found that help
was required by patients with bronchitis and heart trouble. The
help for patients other than tubercular has been part; of the Committee's
work for the past few years.
