WORK OF THE CHEST CLINICS
I am again grateful to Dr. Madigan for submitting the following
report and Table on the work of the Chest Clinics during the year
under review:—
"There has been a steady decline in the numbers of newly
diagnosed tuberculous cases over the past few years, and it is
gratifying to note that amongst the new contacts examined, none
was found to be suffering with the disease. A further 59 contacts
were given B.C.G. vaccination.
During the year, the voluntary scheme for B.C.G. vaccination
of thirteen year old schoolchildren began. At my request, positive
Mantoux reactors found in the preliminary tests, are referred to
the Chest Clinics for fuller investigation. The families of these
children are also invited to attend, and we are thus given additional
facilities in tracking down unsuspected sources of infection. Whilst
welcoming these further measures in dealing with the problem of
tuberculosis, one must admit that the voluntary nature of the
scheme necessarily limits its scope."
