Statistical information relating to the work of the Inspectors is

which were inspected and recorded under the Housing

or injurious to health as to be unfit for human habitation 0
Number of dwelling-houses in respect of which informal notices
were served 305
Number of dwelling-houses in which defects were remedied after
service of informal notices 283
Number of dwelling-houses in respect of which formal notices
were served requiring defects to be remedied 22
Number of dwelling-houses in which defects were remedied after
service of formal notices:
(a) by owners 22
(b) by Local Authority in default of owners 0
Number of complaints received 1,401
Number of initial visits 7,426
Number of re-visits 4,581
Total visits and re-visits 12,007
This figure includes some 2,655 visits to Food premises, compared
with 1,281 similar visits in 1955. This considerable increase is
accounted for partly by the fact that the establishment of Inspectors
was at full strength for the greater part of 1956, contrary to the position
in 1955, but it also emphasizes the attention paid to the Food Hygiene
Regulations which came into force during 1956. It was fortunate that
we were thus able to cope with the matter and to achieve, in so many
cases, the speedy introduction of the much-needed additional hygiene
provisions governing food premises.
Total number of Intimation Notices served 405
Total Number of Statutory Notices served 22
These figures indicate the ready co-operation of owners and other
responsible persons in dealing quickly with nuisances brought to their
notice, thus obviating, in the majority of instances, the need for the
Authority to exercise its Statutory powers. Legal proceedings were
instituted against an owner of property who failed to comply with a
Statutory Notice served by the Authority requiring the abatement of a
statutory nuisance. Following the making of an Order, and a fine of
£1 and £1 1s. 0d. costs, the required work was completed.
