Baby Clinics.
Helpers are supplied at 3 of the baby clinics in the Borough and
assist in the selling of Welfare Foods, weighing and clerical work.
S.S.A.F.A.
The local branch is still run by us from our own Centre and in the
past year over £500 has passed through its hands. Apart from financial
help, clothing has been given and advice on many other matters.
Clothing Depot.
The stock in our Clothing Depot has been increased by clothing from
the Mayor's Fund, and we are able to help many more people than in the
past. Naturally we can only distribute this clothing on the authority of a
reliable person, or body such as the National Assistance Board.
In addition to the aforementioned activities, the W.V.S. has a close
liaison with the Tuberculosis After Care Committee, Area Pensions
Officer, British Legion, The Disabled Persons Committee, and Children's
Homes.
The Children's Clothing Exchange is still being run every Wednesday.
Orange Juice, Cod Liver Oil and Vitamin Tablets are sold in the
Centre.
NATIONAL ASSISTANCE ACT 1948—SECTION .47
Under Section 47 of the above act as amended by the National
Assistance (Amendment) Act 1951, persons suffering from grave chronic
disease, or who are aged, infirm or physically handicapped and who are
living in insanitary conditions and unable to devote to themselves and
not receiving from other persons proper care and attention, may be compulsorily
removed.
Several possible cases were visited and investigated during the year
and in one instance it was necessary to apply to the court for an order of
removal which was granted.
