Although there was a great increase in the amount of " fresh"
meat condemned, the majority of the foods condemned are canned
goods and unfitness for human consumption arises through improper
canning or from damaged packs.
Of the two tons of meat condemned, only a small proportion was
found to be diseased. The remainder both home killed and imported
having decomposed probably through improper storage at some point
in its transit between Slaughter House and Retailer. It is unfortunate
that we had to take this action at a time when meat was still rationed
and in short supply.
A crumpet purchased in Beckenham was found to contain part
of a cigarette. The vendor was prosecuted and fined £10 0s. Od. with
£4 7s. Od. costs.
An informal sample of Tomato Sauce (imported from Australia)
proved to be inferior. Tomato sauce is supposed to contain a minimum
of 6% of tomato solids. This sample contained only 3.6%. Upon
receipt of the Analyst's report, a formal sample was taken but this
proved to be genuine, containing 6.2% tomato solids.
Two Cheese Spread samples were reported by the Analyst as
inferior, because of their poor fat content. No statutory standard
has been prescribed but the matter has been reported to the Ministry
of Food, and it is understood that the Food Standard Division of the
Ministry is given attention to the desirability of setting up a standard
for this food.
