HOUSING.
Although there was no immediate change for the better in the
Housing situation during the year, there wis a more hopeful outlook
for the future.
More building sites were discovered and preliminary steps were taken
in determining their possibilities. These sites, if fully developed, would
provide space for nearly 350 new housing units.
The proposals before the Council contained suggestions for
the redevelopment of part of the Borough, and for some changes in
building density. If this principle is accepted and extended it should be
possible ultimately to cope with the housing needs of the Borough
without encroaching on any existing open spaces.
The matter is still very urgent. During 1950 it was only possible to
rehouse 75 families, and of this number 45 were rehoused in requisitioned
properties.
