SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA
Full details of the Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage, and
Scavenging arrangements have been given in previous reports.
The few premises in the added areas not provided with main
drainage are connected as the development of the area proceeds.

INFECTIOUS DISEASE

The following table gives the number of cases which were notified during the year, the number removed to Hospital for treatment, and the number of deaths.

DIPHTHERIA.
Twenty-two cases of Diphtheria were notified in 1938, compared
with 11 cases in 1937. Eighteen cases occurred in original Beckenham
and 4 in West Wickham.

The age incidence of the cases was :—

Although there were 10 cases in the 5—14 years age group, it
is noteworthy that only 3 of these cases occurred among children
attending the Elementary Schools, in which Diphtheria Immunisation
is carried out. No case of Diphtheria in a person who
had received protective innoculation was notified during the year.
DIPHTHERIA IMMUNISATION.
During 1938, consents were received in respect of 792 children
and of these 221 were under school age; of the remainder, 407
were attending the Elementary Schools in the Borough and 26
were scholars at the County Schools.
