To the Chairman and Members of the
Education Committee
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit for your consideration my Annual
Report on the Medical Inspection and Treatment of School Children
during the year 1925.
The arrangement of the report follows closely the suggestions
and headings given in the Schedule Form 6.M. issued by the Board
of Education in November, 1925.
During the year the Treatment Scheme was amended by extending
to the South Eastern Hospital the same arrangements for the
operative treatment of Tonsils and Adenoids as are in force at the
Beckenham Cottage Hospital.
Proposals for the treatment of "Running Ears" by the method
known as Ionisation were adopted by the Committee and are now
awaiting the approval of the Board of Education.
The attendances at the various Clinics for Inspection and Treatment
are maintained, and I would like to emphasise the value of
the work that is being done at the Dental and Eye Clinics. Mr.
Waters, the School Dentist, is able to inspect at least once a year,
and carry out the necessary treatment for every child in the
Elementary Schools that requires and will take advantage of such
treatment. The contrast between the healthy condition of the teeth
and mouth of the children now, as compared with the early days of
Medical Inspection is very striking, and is reflected in the reduction
in the number of children with enlarged glands and abscesses in the
neck, and I believe has contributed to the reduced incidence of
tuberculosis in the glands of the neck.
The work of the Eye Clinic under Mr. A. E. A. Looseley,
F. R.C.S., continues to be done in a very thorough and expeditious
way, at a minimum cost and loss of time to the parents. If there
is any Elementary School child with a defect in eyesight that admits
of remedy or improvement by suitable glasses, it is not the fault of
the School Medical Service if this has not been remedied.
