GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES IN THE AREA.
Hospitals.—1. Tuberculosis.—The Dispensary Service for this
area of the County, comprising Beckenham, Penge, West Wickham,
Anerley, and uppper Norwood, has its centre in the old Sanitary
Offices adjoining the Beckenham Fire Station, and the Tuberculosis
Officer for the area is the Medical Officer of Health of Beckenham.
Sanatoria and Hospitals for Tuberculosis are provided by the
County Council.
2. Maternity.—Maternity Home.—The Urban Districts of
Beckenham and Penge have provided a Joint Maternity Home at
80, Croydon Road, Beckenham. The Ministry of Health have approved
of the accommodation for 14 beds.
3. Children.—The Council do not provide, nor do they directly
subsidize any Hospital for children. The Education Committee has
made arrangements with the South Eastern Hospital for Children,
Sydenham, to carry out certain treatment arising out of School
Medical Inspection. Many children obtain hospital treatment, both
in- and out-patient, at the London Hospitals.
There is, however, a need for further provision locally. The
Infant Welfare Centre and the School Clinics would be greatly
assisted in their work if they had at their disposal a few hospital
beds or cots to which infants and young children could be sent
who require hospital treatment.
I recommend the Council to consider the making of further
provision on these lines.
4. Fever Hospitals.—The Bromley and Beckenham Joint
Hospital Board provides Fever Hospital accommodation for Beckenham
and a number of other districts. The Board have erected two
Hospitals, one for the isolation of Smallpox and the other for certain
infectious diseases. In previous reports I have given details of the
position, accommodation, staff, and cost to the District Council of
these Hospitals.
