Legal proceedings were taken against the parents in 12 cases and

EVENING PLAY CENTRES.
The Play Centre at the Alexandra Schools, referred to in my
last year's report, has been open during the winter months and
games and recreation under the supervision of voluntary workers
have been provided. The following information is extracted from
the annual report of the Honorary Secretary:—
Number of Children in Attendance.—The average attendance
before Christmas was 125 out of 130 children. After Christmas there
was a slight falling off in the attendance owing to children leaving
school in mid-winter, and to a certain amount of sickness. The
average attendance for the whole period was 112.
Routine.—Active games for the boys and girls have played a
large part in the Curriculum, also handwork, i.e., painting and raffia
work. Chip carving has been started and has proved very popular.
At the end of both sessions an entertainment has been given to the
children.
Workers.—There are 18 workers at the Centre, some of whom
attend once a fortnight only. On the Committee are two representatives
of the Education Committee, viz., Mrs. Brazil, B.A., and Mr.
J. A. Bennett.
PHYSICAL TRAINING.
No Special Organiser of Physical Training has been appointed
for the Elementary Schools. The Teachers give instruction in
physical drill and carry out the exercises prescribed in the official
syllabus of special instruction issued by the Board of Education.
