B.C.G. VACCINATION
All school children from the age of 13 years are offered the opportunity
to have a B.C.G. vaccination against tuberculosis, should this be indicated
following a simple skin test.
During the year, 1,408 children were skin tested. 1,244 were found to
be suitable and were vaccinated with B.C.G. 164 pupils were found to have
a positive reaction to the skin test and were referred to the chest clinic
for a routine x-ray. In addition to the above, the Chest Physicians skintested
145 persons of whom 116 were found to be suitable for vaccination and
92 were vaccinated.
The number of acceptances for this protection is disappointingly low, and
the co-operation of parents, teachers and health staff is needed to improve
matters.
