THE HEALTH OF BARKING
He only came into the world an hour ago—born prematurely he is taken to hospital
for special treatment.
would be available for domestic work in your hospitals, nurseries or clinics. In
addition, you decided to retain and extend so far as possible your panel of casual
home helps who were prepared to undertake duty as and when required.
At the end of 1946, you were employing 5 full-time home helps and you had
7 casual workers on your panel.
A total of 73 cases were attended by these home helps during the year. These
were chiefly home confinement cases but in a few instances a home help was sent to
assist in a home where there was a case of illness.
Pending the building up of a sufficiently large panel to meet the demand for
home helps, a scheme had been introduced in 1945 for the payment by you of
private home helps attending at confinement cases where a Council home help was
not available. This arrangement continued during 1946 and 175 cases were so dealt
with during the year.
