5. NUTRITION.
Once again I would like to point out that I am not particularly interested in
propaganda work as to the scientific values of foods, whether expressed as calorific
values, as vitamin contents or other scientific data. It appears to me of primary
importance that by legislation, direct and indirect, there shall be a sufficient
amount of food, of sufficient variation, for all people with ordinary tastes to obtain
by natural selection all that is necessary in a first-class diet.
It will be remembered that the Corporation during the year gave over 110,000
meals to necessitous children, whilst at your Hospitals it is by no means uncommon
to provide over 700 meals a day.
All these meals provided can and should be of very considerable value in
educating the public.
