Although it is gratifying to record the general increase in
natural as distinct from bottle feeding throughout the country,
there is still a great deal of unnecessary bottle feeding practiced.
There are, however, many formidable obstacles in the path of
natural feeding advocates, and one of the most serious is that
commonly known as vested interests. The manufacture of dried
milk has become an extensive and lucrative one in which much
capital is invested and one of the principal sources from which
interest on this capital can accrue is the mother of the family
of one or more children. No time in many instances is lost in
bringing to the notice of a young mother after the birth of her
