There were 938 births notified during the year, and 964
were registered. In the 16 cases who failed to comply with

the previous year out of 885 notifications there were 63 defaulters.

midwives were continued, the proportions were 382 by the
former and 556 by the latter, thus only a little over one-third
of the births were attended by fully qualified medical assistance.
Practically the whole number were visited, the figure
worked out to 91 per cent. of the number notified.
The age of the mother at birth in relation to the sex and
power of survival of the child is given in the following table,
based on the experience of the last two years. The general

the greatest chance of living one year.
