The corresponding rate for the previous year was 12.0 and the average yearly death
rate of the Borough for the previous five years was 13.0 per 1000 of population.
Details of the corresponding figures for previous years will be found in the table on
page 14, and of the rates of other Metropolitan Boroughs on page 16.
Adjusted Death Bate.
The following explanatory passages are quoted from a memorandum issued by the
Begistrar-General in March, 1935 :—
" At the end of Table S.D. 24 will be found a factor (labelled C.F. 1.02) by which
the crude death rate of the area should be multiplied in order to make it comparable, from
a mortality point of view, with the crude death rate of the country as a whole, or with the
mortality of any other local area, the crude death rate of which should be similarly
modified with its own factor for the purpose "
The necessity for the application of this factor arises from the fact that the populations
of all areas are not" similarly coi stituted as regards the proportions of their sex and age group
components and their crude death rates fail as true comparative mortality indexes in
that their variations are not due to mortality alone, but arise also from differences in their
population constitution, the two elements being combined in indistinguishable proportions
The factor may be said to represent the population handicap to be applied to
the area."
Applied to St. Pancras, the death rate of 13 5 per 1000 of population is adjusted by
the comparability factor of 1.02 to 13.8 per 1000 of population.
Causes of Death.
The principal causes of death as furnished by the Begistrar-General are set out in the
following table.
As his figure for total deaths (2,416) includes all deaths registered during the period
from 1st January to 31st December, it is less than the number (2,478) compiled locally for
the period 53 weeks ending 2nd January. The latter figure has been used in this Beport
for statistical purposes.
