Section II.-POPULATION, MARRIAGES, BIRTHS AND DEATHS.
POPULATION.
The total population of the Borough at the Census of 1931 was 198,133.
The Census figure of 198,133 represents a decrease in the population of the Borough,
of 63 per cent, since the Census of 1921, at which date the figure was 211,366.
The mid-year (1936) population of the Borough is estimated by the Registrar-General
to be 183,900, the corresponding estimate for the previous year (1935) being 185,300.

The following figures shew the estimated number of persons in each of the Wards in the Borough :—

MARRIAGES.
The number of marriages celebrated during the year was 2,032. This is equal to a rate
of 11.0 marriages per 1000 of total population, or a rate of 22.0 persons marrying per 1000 of
the population.
The average yearly number of marriages during the preceding five years was 1,988,
equal to a rate of 10'4 per 1000 of population.
BIRTHS.
The number of births registered during the year belonging to St. Pancras was 2,389,
equal to an annual birth rate of 13.0 per 1000 of population. This is a decrease of 0.3 births
per 1000 under last year's figures.
The rate for the previous year was 13.3. and the rate for 1934 was 13.1.
The actual number of births registered as having taken place in the Borough during
the year was 3,739. This figure is corrected by deducting the births of non residents (1,857),
which occurred chiefly in various hospitals and other institutions in the Borough, and by
adding the births belonging to St. Pancras (507) which occurred outside the Borough. The
corrected figure is 2,389.
