35
suits have been highly gratifying. In the school report, figures are
given which show the work which has been done in this direction,
and it appears that from the herd immunity point of view, we can
claim that the procedure has been a success. Individually also,
it has been successful. Among 3725, of whom 2725 had received
the full protective three doses and 1,000 were Schick negative,
there were only 3 children who developed clinical diphtheria, and
were admitted to the Fever Hospital. These cases occurred within
3 months of the final inoculation. These cases were comparatively
mild, and all recovered without any of the usual complications.
The results of our work have justified the claims which were
made when the scheme for immunisation was launched. We are
now concentrating upon the pre-school child and the school entrants,
and the future success of the scheme will depend upon the extent
to which the parents will respond.
