The incidence of all the infectious diseases was considerably
lower. There was no death from Whooping Cough and Scarlet
Fever and a diminution in the number of deaths from Measles and
Diphtheria.
There were 5 maternal deaths; 3 from sepsis following abortion.
There is reason to think that the practice of abortion is
widespread, not only in this district but also in other surrounding
districts.
A feature of recent annual reports has been the inclusion
of deaths from germ disease of the central nervous system, such
as encephalitis lethargica, cerebro-spinal meningitis, anterior poliomyelitis,
&c.
Last year 4 deaths occurred from encephalitis lethargica,
or sleepy sickness.
Cancer still seems to be on the increase and last year claimed
a higher number of deaths.
