the Registrar General estimated the total population in June 1919
at 64,236.
During the war, large munition factories were established in
and near the district and a large influx of population into the district
occurred. The closure of the munition works and the cessation of
war work accounted for the decrease which occurred in the population
between 1919 and 1921.
The Registrar General has as yet only published the preliminary
report which includes only the tables of the total population
in administrative and parliamentary areas, but some detailed
information is now available at the Census Office, and the following
tables have been obtained for different purposes.
