way not only create inconveniences, but sometimes, possibly, are capable
of infecting neighbouring houses. It is impossible even to mitigate
the evil by the use of disinfecting and deodorizing substances;
it has been found in other places that they constitute but a very
slight palliative, the cost of which would not be justified by the results
obtained. Moreover, the methods employed to disinfect the refuse
are most difficult of application.
The Council is fully aware of the utter unsuitability of the site
for tipping purposes, and the question of a refuse Destructor has
been discussed for many years. It was originally intended to erect a
Destructor on the Friar's estate, purchased by the Council. The
consent of the vendors was refused, and a site selected in Southfield
Road. The consent of the Local Government Board to erect a
•destructor on the latter site was withheld. Finally, the Council purchased
a site adjoining "The Friars," and a Committee of the Council
is now making arrangements for the erection of the Destructor.
The consent of the Local Government Board has been obtained, and
it is hoped that an advance will now be made, and the practice now
carried out will soon be abandoned.
The amount of refuse to be disposed of yearly exceeds 12,000
tons.
