Mount; the building and subsequent completion at the
beginning of the year of the isolation hospital; and the
acceptance of the contract for erection of the dust
destructor adjoining the sewage works. This latter scheme
is, in my opinion, of vital importance, and I trust you
will push the work forward without delay. You will
notice that a great deal of useful work has been done by
the Health Department during the year, and I am much
indebted to Mr. Kinch, chief sanitary inspector, Mr.
Gough, assistant sanitary inspector, Miss Bulkeley
Williams, lady health visitor, and Miss Morton, typist,
for their kind help and co-operation.
I think you were wise, in your decision, to purchase
the Cock and Crown Yard property, as, besides abolishing
an unhealthy area, it will be a general municipal improvement,
and has avoided the proceedings and litigation
that invariably follow closing and demolition orders.
We have to think not so much of the present occupiers
as of their children and the subsequent generation, and I
am afraid at times we err on the side of leniency in
dealing with poor class property.
I am, Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
G. A. GARRY SIMPSON.
