Health Education.
In the Public Health Department the practice of this important subject falls mainly into two
channels, namely : the spreading of information by personal contact, and education by means of
posters, pamphlets, bookmarks and other visual media. The first is undoubtedly the more effective
and with this in mind the public health inspectors take advantage of opportunities which arise in the
course of their day-to-day visits. For displaying posters and distributing pamphlets and bookmarks,
full use is made of available sites and the facilities afforded in the public libraries. So far as possible
a different theme is used each month, regard being had to topicality ; for example, " bronchitis "
with the onset of winter. Observation leads one to believe that of the many thousands of pamphlets
distributed in this way the vast majority are taken by individual members of the public with discrimination
and because their interest in the subject has been aroused. A good deal remains to be
done in the field of food hygiene education and efforts are again being made to interest some of the
larger food firms in the Borough in accepting courses of food hygiene for their staffs.
