June.—Apart from 1903, wettest June at Kew (4.08 ins.) since records began in 1856. Regent's
Park had 6.35 inches, including 2.01 inches on 9th. Well over an inch fell generally on 26th.
Monthly rainfall variable, about 270 per cent. of average. Four days with thunder. Sunshine
about 70 per cent. of normal. Temperature 1.1 degrees below average.
July.—Little rain from 4th-15th. Rain 93 per cent. of average. Sunshine 95 per cent. of average.
Two warm and three cool spells with mean temperatures 0.6 degrees F. below normal.
August.—Generally unsettled. Very heavy thunderstorm on 22nd. Month's rain 154 per cent.
of average. 62 per cent. average sunshine. Dullest August at Kew since 1912, the only duller
year since records began in 1880. Cool by day, but warm nights brought mean temperatures
only a little below average.
September.—Mainly very wet, but month's rainfall variable, 163-264 per cent. of normal. (Mean
205 per cent.). Wettest September at Kew since 1927. Heavy rain in places on 3rd, 5th and
23rd. Sunshine 104 per cent. of average. Temperature 2.5 degrees above normal. Nights
particularly warm with no ground or air frost. Maximum of 82 degrees F. on the 5th and
minimum of 41 degrees F. on 27th.
October.—Changeable at first, with scattered thunderstorms but little rain from 14th to 19th.
Month's rainfall 85-125 per cent. average (Mean 108 per cent.). Sunshine near or a little above
normal. Temperatures 1.6 degrees F. above average. Only 1 ground frost and no air frost,
with night minima near normal day maxima from 21st-24th. Maximum 65 degrees F.
Minimum 35 degrees F. Mean Sea Level pressure at Kew rose to 1040.6 mb. (30.73 inches)
on 23rd, the highest recorded there in October since records began in 1869.
November.—Most of the month's rain fell on 1st and 2nd. Little rain after 12th. Month's rainfall
about 73 per cent. average. Much mist and fog later in month, with dull weather. Sunshine
about 83 per cent. average—dullest November at Kew since 1946. Mean temperature near
average. First air frosts of the year.
December.—Wet spells from 9th to 19th and after 26th, otherwise dry with much mist and fog.
Mainly mild, especially by night, after a rather cold start. Temperatures 1.0 degrees above
normal. Maximum of 55 degrees F. on 27th and 28th.
Public Holiday Weather.
Easter. (4th to 7th April)
Coldest Easter weekend on record. No colder Good Friday since 1917. Other days
coldest this century. Sleet during early hours of Good Friday gave way to sunny
periods but rain returned late evening, became heavy at times, turning to sleet or snow
before dawn on Easter Eve, then back to rain around midday. Cloudy and misty with
fog patches later. Easter Sunday cloudy after early morning rain and drizzle: bright
intervals and occasional light showers on Monday.
Whitsun. (24th to 26th May)
Windy with sunny periods and isolated showers on Saturday. Similar but less windy
and less bright on Sunday. Wet at first on Monday but brighter later.
August. (2nd to 4th August)
Long sunny periods on Saturday but also scattered showers and local thunder after
midday. Then cloudy with a little rain late Sunday and very early Monday.
Christmas. (24th to 26th December)
Apart from bright intervals on Christmas Eve, sunless. Mist and fog, thick at times,
on 24th and 25th. A little rain and drizzle late Christmas evening and at times on
Boxing Day.
