POPULATION.
The population estimated to the middle of 1938 by the Registrar-General is
shown in Table 3, and is that used in calculating the various rates given in this
report. For information, the estimated population of each of the Sub-Districts is
also set out and for comparison the Census and estimated figures for 1931.

BIRTHS.
Registration:—The number of births registered during 1938 was 802,* being
57 less than in 1937. Of the children born, 410 were boys and 392 girls. The birth
rate per 1,000 of the population was 8.84 as against 9.32 in 1937.
Table 4 contains a comparison of the rates in the several registration sub-districts and the Borough as a whole for 1938, with those of each of the five previous years.
